State, Community Leaders Urge Release of Texas Death Row Inmate

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas lawmakers are pushing for clemency in an execution scheduled for later this month.

15 years after the death of her 2-year-old daughter in Harlingen, Melissa Lucio is on the death row. She’s scheduled to be put to death on April 27.

Prosecutors said Lucio abused the girl, but witnesses contend it was a fall down the stairs that killed her. Lucio’s attorneys have said there is crucial evidence that was not presented at trial.

Alongside a group of state lawmakers in Dallas this week, Melissa’s son John pleaded for his mom to be set free.

“I don’t want my mom to be executed,” he said as he became emotional. “I want you to know mother, I love you so much. I would trade my life for you, mom.”

State Representative Victoria Neave said she and dozens of other state lawmakers are committed “to put the pressure that is needed in order to save her life.”

The call for Lucio’s release has become louder since the airing of last year’s ‘Hulu’ series “The State of Texas vs. Melissa.”

Dozens of state lawmakers are expected to address the plea from Lucio’s family next week in Austin.
