City of Denton Opens Warming Shelter at MLK JR. Recreational Center

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – As winter weather continues its grip on North Texas, warming shelters are opening up across the region.

In Denton, the MLK Jr. Recreational Center at 1300 Wilson Street will open its doors at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through noon on Friday.

The City of Denton’s Stuart Birdseye said cots and other amenities will be available to those who need it.

“We want to make sure there’s a warmth available for anyone who needs it whether its a stranded motorists or resident whose home is not heated properly or a person experiencing homelessness,” he said.

Other cities are opening shelters to accommodate residents.

The City of Dallas is encouraging residents to take advantage of city libraries and park and recreation centers during normal business hours.

The Our Calling shelter in Dallas will open its doors at 5 pm Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the 20s with wind chills in the teens.
