(WBAP/KLIF) – The first ever woman to serve as Dallas mayor has passed away. Adlene Harrison died of natural causes Saturday morning. She’s most known for serving as Dallas’ acting mayor in 1976, but was also played a pivotal role in the development of Dallas-Area Rapid Transit, serving as the first chair of DART’s board. Harrison was always a big advocate for the environment, public transportation, and reproductive rights. She served as a regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency from 1977 to 1981. Current
Dallas mayor Eric Johnson released a statement on her death Saturday evening:
“We have lost a Dallas legend. Adlene Harrison had an amazing impact on this city. As the first woman that this city called its mayor, she made history. As a loyal, smart, and caring person, she made countless friends. And as a fearless and strong leader, she made Dallas better. We grieve with her friends and family, but we should also celebrate her inspiring 98 years of life. May God rest her spirited soul.”
