DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas Police Association responded on Thursday to charges brought by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office against one current and one former Dallas officer. The charges are related to alleged excessive force during protests in Downtown Dallas in May of 2020.
DPA President Mike Mata said that protesters and Police Officers are not being treated equally by the District Attorney’s Office.
“The bigger picture problem with that is that there will be another riot in Downtown Dallas,” said Mata. “And because nobody was held accountable for those actions that happened over those three days it will be worse than it was in the past. Because they got a free pass.”
According to the DPA, the Officers were defending themselves, fellow officers and peaceful protesters from violent rioters that were throwing large rocks, bricks and frozen water bottles with the intent to harm.
In a statement, the DPA suggested the decision to bring charges by D.A. John Creuzot could have been political.
“The politically-motivated actions by the DA, who is facing a challenger in the Democratic primary, come less than one week before the start of early voting,” the statement read.
When asked for a response to the suggestion, D.A. Creuzot’s office said he had no comment.
