BETHDESDA, MD (WBAP/KLIF News) – Celebrated Tuskegee Airman Brigadier General Charles McGee has died at 102.
He’s one of the last living members of the famed pilots.
In a statement, McGee’s family said he died peacefully in his sleep at on January 16 at his Bethdesda, Maryland home.
General McGee was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 7, 1919.
He served as a member of the Tuskegee Airman pilots in World War II and as an Air Force fighter pilot in the North Korean and Vietnam wars. McGee was also a part of the Eighth Air Force bombers “Red Tails Squadron.”
In total, he flew more than 400 combat missions.
Former President George W. Bush awarded McGee with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.
Former President Donald Trump promoted McGee from Colonel to Brigadier General after signing the National Defense Authorization Act of 2020 into law.
That same year, McGee was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
