COVID Related Absences Prompt More North Texas Schools to Cancel Classes

RED OAK (WBAP/KLIF) – The COVID-19 Omicron variant continues to take hold in schools.

More North Texas school districts are canceling class as absences rise with a spike in COVID cases.

Red Oak ISD Communications Director, Beth Trimble said on Tuesday that the district will close Friday to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

“One of the ways that we can do that is having an extra day apart,” said Trimble. “With the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday coming up on Monday, that will give us an extra day to get staff back in the classroom.”

Students and teachers Kemp ISD, east of Dallas, won’t return to the classroom until next Tuesday because of a high number of COVID related absences.

“While we understand this may be an inconvenience for families, we are taking this time to mitigate the spread of the COVID virus, by minimizing person-to-person contact and thoroughly disinfecting all district facilities and transportation,” Kemp ISD Superintendent, Dr. James Young in a letter to parents.

Boyd ISD in Wise County also canceled classed through Friday due to a spike in COVID cases.
