NBC News – (WBAP/KLIF) Former Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole has died at the age of 98, reportedly, in his sleep, and only seven months after announcing he’d been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
Dole was known as a World War II hero, a champion of veteran’s rights, a sense of humor and ability to get along with those on “the other side of the aisle”.
Dole served for 27 years as a Kansas Senator; two terms as the Senate Majority Leader, an unsuccessful run as the Republican presidential nominee against Bill Clinton in 1996, his third attempt at the White House.
Dole had many roles in serving the nation, but is also widely known for his sense of humor. In later years he became the face of a few products advertised on television, including Viagara, which was ground breaking for a politician beforehand likely considered too serious to publicly endorse aids of a personal nature.
Dole in 2005 quipped humor was needed in Washington “to break the tension sometimes and you can do it with just…without offending anybody”. Bob Dole, gone at the age of 98
