(WBAP/KLIF) — Two West Texas high schools come together after a tragic school bus accident kills three people on Friday. An Andrews High School band director and bus driver were killed in a fiery crash on the way to a rivalry football game with Big Spring.
53-year-old band director Darin Kimbrogh Johns and 69-year-old bus driver Mark Elbert Boswell died when a pick-up truck collided with an Andrews High School bus on I-20 near Big Spring.
An Andrews assistant football coach says the game was canceled.
WFAA says the driver of the pick-up, 59-year-old Nathan Haile of Midland, also died in the crash. DPS officials say that the pick-up was traveling the wrong way on I-20 nwhen it struck an Andrews High School bus carrying the marching band to the rivalry football game.
The accident occurred just before 5pm when an F-350 pick-up turned the wrong way on Interstate 20 and slammed head on into the bus bursting into flames.
Big Spring Mayor Shannon Thomason says 11 students also suffered injuries and transported to local hospitals.
Big Spring residents provided food, drinks, and support for their football rivals. Thomason says his town is devastated for their neighbors.
