DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas City Council voted to approve two long standing items during Wednesday’s meeting.

The council approved a parental leave policy that allows city employees to take up to six weeks of paid time off after the birth or adoption of their child. The policy doesn’t apply to elected officials.

Dallas joins Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth as Texas cities offering paid time off for parents.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the City Council also named its choice to lead an investigation into the deletion of police data files.

According to the city’s IT department, millions of Police evidence files were deleted by a city employee. On Wednesday, the City Council officially approved the hiring of Kirkland & Ellis Law Firm to lead the independent investigation.

Former U.S. Attorney, Eric Nealy Cox, is now a partner at the firm. She told the council earlier this month that she expects the review to be wrapped up in a few months.

“This city wants answers,” said Cox. “And everybody wants to be able to move on from this.”

The city plans to to pay just under $550,000 dollars for the investigation.
