(WBAP/KLIF) — Thousands of travelers were delayed, over the weekend, as Southwest Airlines canceled hundreds of flights. The cancellations were blamed on the severe weather and air traffic control issues. According to flight tracker Flightaware, 28% of Southwest’s scheduled flights were grounded, the highest rate of any major U.S. airline.
Allegiant airlines had 5% of its flights canceled, while Spirit experienced 4% and American 2%. Dallas Love Field ranked third, Sunday, in the amount of canceled departures and arrivals. Airline officials say they understand the frustration flight cancellations created for customers and employees and apologized.
“People are stuck and can’t get home,” a passenger headed for Tampa said on Monday. “I called when our flight got delayed to get someone on the line to schedule a new flight. No one ever answered.”
Southwest continued with the cancellation of hundreds of more flights on Monday morning.
The airline blames the weather air traffic control issues. But the FAA said there haven’t been air traffic control issued since last Friday.
