FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- After over four decades, the man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering 17-year-old Carla Walker of Fort Worth goes to trial in Tarrant County.
The 1974 cold case was opened back up after new technology linked 78-year-old Glen Samuel McCurley’s DNA to crime scene evidence.
police say walker was in the car with her boyfriend after a Valentines Day dance when McCurely forced her out, fired a shot and pistol whipped her boyfriend, Rodney McCoy, until he was unconscious.
McCoy was called up as the first witness and recalls the moments of her kidnapping.
“The blood started flowing down my forehead into my eyes. I am not sure how many times I was hit but it was more than once according to Carla’s reaction, she screamed ‘stop hitting him’,” said McCoy. “Carla turned her face to me and I can visualize her say Rodney go get dad, go get my dad, those were the last ords I heard from her,” said McCoy.
Walker’s body was found three days later in a culvert near Benbrook Lake. Prosecutors aren’t seeking the death penalty for Mccurley.
McCurley pleaded not guilty Friday. Defense Attorneys suggested the evidence could have been contaminated or there could have been other suspects that slipped through the cracks.
