COLLEYVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Colleyville Police Department won two prestigious awards for its work busting a worldwide sex trafficking website and an international elder fraud ring out of Nigeria.
The awards were bestowed from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the largest professional association for police leaders in the world.
Each year, the IACP honors 15 law enforcement officers and agencies who exhibit “leadership, excellence and professionalism” while doing their work.
Colleyville PD received the 2021 IACP/Thomson Reuters Excellence in Criminal Investigation Award in recognition of the exception innovation in criminal investigations for its part in a joint effort to bring down the CityXGuide website.
The site was used to promote, advertise and facilitate prostitution worldwide. The team identified numerous underage victims, including a 13-year-old who was recovered in North Texas.
The department also received the 2021 IACP Leadership in the Prevention of Transnational Crime Award for its work in a joint effort in an investigation from a local victim that developed into several romance and lottery scams involving elderly victims nationwide.
The team ultimately identified a West African fraud ring with ties to Nigerian crime syndicates with numerous suspects who scammed over $4 million from the victims.
Colleyville Police Chief Michael C. Miller said, “It is a feat for any agency to win one award, but for a department the size of Colleyville to win two agency awards in one year is absolutely incredible. It speaks to the capabilities of our team, the interesting and meaningful work we are doing here, and the quality of our partnerships.”
