Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – Founded by Pastor Richie Butler, Project Unity has been instrumental in bringing resources to under-served communities across Dallas during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the highly successful “Together We Test” program, which brought mass testing to thousands of under-served Dallas residents.
While the large urban vaccination hubs provide tremendous service, community-based care centers like Brother Bill’s Helping Hand are deeply trusted by population groups who are unable to access large hubs or face other obstacles preventing them from receiving vaccinations.
“Together We Vaccinate” is critical to the success of achieving herd immunity,” Pastor Butler said. “Working with partners like Brother Bill’s Helping Hand, we will offer life-saving vaccines to under-served residents where they live and who may have concerns that require a conversation and reassurance from a trusted medical professional.”
Recent reports suggest that the U.S. might meet the meet the demand for COVID-19 vaccine sooner rather than later—the so-called “Vaccine Wall,” as early as the end of April—and before the nation reaches the 70-90 threshold for achieving herd immunity.
Attention will then shift to getting people who are fearful or have other reasons for not taking the vaccine to receive it.
“In the same way we wear seat belts, we take vaccines and we wear masks,” said Wesley Keyes, Executive Director of Brother Bill’s Helping Hand.
Together We Vaccinate comes at a critical time when state and federal data show that minority groups are being vaccinated at far below the rates of mostly white, wealthy communities. To combat this disparity, Project Unity has partnered with Pastor Butler’s Church – St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church – and Catalyst Health Network to bring drive-thru vaccination directly to those in need.
