Dallas Mayor Calls for Investigation into why Officer was Left On-Duty after being Named Person of Interest in Two Murders

Bryan Riser, 36 (Dallas Police Department)

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced on Monday that he is calling on a newly established ethics committee to investigate the decision to leave Dallas Police Officer Bryan Riser on duty after he was named a person of interest in two capital murder cases.

According to DPD, Riser was linked to a possible connection in the murders in 2019 but remained on duty until he was arrested last week. Riser was charged with two counts of Capital Murder in two separate 2017 killings. Riser is accused of orchestrating two separate murder for hire plots.

Mayor Johnson directed the committee to investigate and hold public hearings surrounding the decision.

“This is an awful situation, and the public deserves answers regarding who knew what, when they knew it, and why the Officer remained on active duty,” said Mayor Johnson. “I fully expect this committee to get to the bottom of exactly what transpired in a fair, judicious, and transparent manner.”

Former Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said last week that Riser was left on duty to avoid compromising the case against him. She initially said the FBI was part of the decision not place Riser on duty, but later clarified it was solely the decision of the department after the FBI rebuked her claim.
