Texas (WBAP/KLIF) – Lawsuits are mounting against ERCOT and local power companies after massive outages during last week’s record cold snap.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas and Entergy Corporation are named in $100,000,000 gross negligence suit in the death of an 11-year old Conroe boy who is believed to have died of hypothermia in his family’s mobile home.
Meantime, the Texas Supreme Court is reviewing ERCOT’s claim to sovereign immunity from responsibility.
The suit alleges the utility giants “put profits over the welfare of people” by ignoring previous recommendations to winterize its power grid.
Another lawsuit filed in Nueces County in Ccorpus Cristi also alleges negligence against ERCOT and also names American Electric Power.
Additionally, Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched a civil probe of ERCOT and and electric companies statewide.
Meantime, the Texas Supreme Court is reviewing ERCOT’s claim to sovereign immunity from responsibility.
More interesting facts on ERCOT: The Texas Supreme Court has agreed to review a lower court’s ruling that the state power grid manager is entitled to sovereign immunity, a legal principle that protects governments and their agencies from lawsuits. What prompted this? 1/
