FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- Fort Worth officials say at least 6 people have died, 36 patients were transported from the scene and 65 total patients have received medical care after a devastating crash on 35W Thursday morning
MedStar’s Matt Zavadsky says everyone worked together to help get people out of their cars to the hospital or to shelter.
“We were able to bring shelter buses up to the scene so people who couldn’t leave, weren’t hurt but we didn’t want them to become victims suffering form hypothermia,” he said.
The accident occurred as road conditions were icy across the metroplex.
According to MedStar EMS, the accident happened around 6 a.m. near 35W NB and 28th Street. Several 18 wheelers were involved in the crash and at least 30 people needed medical transport. Some motorists involved in the accident were taken from the scene on buses to get out of the cold.
“Keep in mind, if their vehicle suffered a minor accident, maybe their heater isn’t working,” said Fort Worth Police Officer, Daniel Segura told WBAP’S Chris Salcedo Show. “So we have to take them from their vehicle to a nearby community center that is safe and warm.”
Segura said he hasn’t seen an accident anything like Thursday’s crash in his 20 years working with Fort Worth PD.
The Riverside Community Center is being used as a site for reunification.
Officials say those involved were essential workers like healthcare professionals and truck drivers. With more wintry weather in the forecast, they urge everyone to stay off the roads as much as possible.
Crews will continue to treat roads with brine. “We are on the streets 24 hours a day and if any of us see conditions that are unsafe, it is reported,” said Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis.
Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price is asking to keep all those involved in you thoughts and prayers. She said in the coming days, they will post how you can help most.
