LANCASTER (WBAP/KLIF)-Walmart is building a large sale e-commerce project in Lancaster that will create more than 1,300 jobs.
The City of Lancaster Approved an $800 million investment for Walmart to build two e-commerce facilities to keep up with the growing online shopping demand.
“The total benefit, after tax rebates, will bring in close to $2.3 million dollars to the City of Lancaster annually,” said City Manager Opal Mauldin-Jones.
Mauldin-Jones said it’s expected to have a great economic impact to the city by generating more than $34 million over 15 years.
The facility will be 1.9 million square feet.
This isn’t the only expansion Walmart plans to do in North Texas. The company plans to build fulfillment centers inside dozens of stores across the metroplex to expand its ability to get pickup orders ready faster.
“Our customers love the speed and convenience of pickup and delivery, and we’re committed to finding faster ways to serve them, which is why we’re scaling the number of stores that will also serve as local fulfillment centers. We’re already planning dozens of locations, with many more to come,” said Tom Ward, SVP of Customer Product at Walmart,
A local fulfillment center (LFC) is a compact, modular warehouse built within, or added to, a store. In addition to fresh and frozen items, LFCs can store thousands of the items customers want most, from consumables to electronics.
Instead of an associate walking the store to fulfill an order from our shelves, automated bots retrieve the items from within the fulfillment center. The items are then brought to a picking workstation, where the order can be assembled with speed.
So far, Walmart has identified two local stores to be part of the program’s initial phase, Plano and Lewisville.
