Proposed Legislation Protects Concerned Texans in Good Faith

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – A State Representative from North Texas is behind a bill that promotes the commonly used phrase, “see something, say something.”

Plano Representative Matt Shaheen announced this week that he has filed legislation to protect Texans reporting suspicious activity in good faith from being sued in civil courts.

“In cases like the San Bernardino shooting and the Orlando Massacre, neighbors noticed suspicious behavior but were too afraid to alert local law enforcement,” Shaheen said. “This bill helps to prevent mass shootings and protects people who report this kind of behavior in good faith so that together we can make our communities safer.”

The bill would not protect individuals who intentionally report fake threats with malicious intent.

Shaheen said the bill is timely amid a recent increase in school shootings and terroristic threats.

The Texas legislature convenes next month.
