Dallas Mayor has Concerns with Hiring Process in Search for Chief of Police

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has concerns about the hiring process as the city looks to bring in a new Police Chief.

Current Chief of Police, Renee Hall, plans to leave the department at the end of this month after submitting her resignation earlier this year.

In the City of Dallas, the City Manager is tasked with hiring the Police Chief. That post belongs to T.C. Broadnax, who hired Hall.

“I have some concerns about the process, but it’s literally not in my control,” Mayor Johnson told WBAP/KLIF during a ‘Year End Conversation’ hosted by the Dallas Regional Chamber on Thursday.

The city has put out a public survey about desired qualities in a Police Chief, but Mayor Johnson said he doesn’t believe that’s enough.

“It’s not the same as a legislative-style hearing where anybody who wants to can sign up and say this is how crime affects me everyday,” emphasized Mayor Johnson. “I don’t know why anybody wouldn’t want it but I know I want it. We’ll see if we get it but I don’t know.”

Johnson said he thinks the hiring process should be primarily handled by the Public Safety Committee of the Dallas City Council. But that decision is not up to the Mayor.
