TARRANT COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF)- Tarrant County leaders are concerned over the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the county.

Public Health Director Vinny Taneja addressed the Commissioners Court saying he’s worried because there’s been several single day highs over the last week.

Taneja announced over 1,500 cases Monday, the fourth time in the past five days of single-day highs.

“The acceleration has been very rapid. With gradual cases healthcare, public health and our community can handle that but when it starts to accelerate like this that’s when it starts to put pressure everywhere,” said Taneja.

Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley says the return of school and school-sponsored sporting events is causing the surge in Covid-19 cases.

Whitley said if they had the authority to suspend those events he would.

“Those are the things I wish would cease right now. I don’t have the authority, the Governor hasn’t allowed us to have the authority but I believe very strongly that those are some of the areas that are causing the significant increase in the spread,” said Whitley.  “I wish schools would look into the possibility of suspending or postponing athletic activities,” he said.

Whitley says he will look to extend the county’s mask order that’s set to expire November 27th.

Taneja says if the trend continues they’ll need to issue a public health warning
