What You Need to Know About Mail-In Voting in Texas

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) — On July 27, 2020, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an emergency proclamation extending the early voting period for the November 3, 2020 General/Joint Election by an extra week and allowing a voter to deliver a marked ballot in person prior to and on Election Day. To assist voters with this change in process, we are providing the below information. Additionally, the information can be retrieved by calling the Dallas County Elections Hotline at 469-627-VOTE (8683) or by visiting our website: www.DallasCountyVotes.org.

Please note that Monday, October 5, 2020 is the deadline for an individual to register to vote or update their voter registration information such as name or address. Before an individual may apply for ballot by mail, they must be registered to vote.

1.) Requirements to Apply for Ballot by Mail
A voter may apply for a ballot by mail if the individual falls into one of the categories listed below:
• 65 years of age or older
• Disability
• Expected absence from the county
• Confined in jail, but eligible to vote

2.) How to Apply for Ballot by Mail
An individual wanting to apply for ballot by mail can visit our website and download the Application for Ballot by Mail that’s available in both English and Spanish. The application period is open now and runs through Friday, October 23, 2020; however, for those wishing to apply for a ballot by mail in person, the deadline is Monday, October 12, 2020.

Applications can be hand-delivered, mailed, e-mailed or faxed back to the Dallas County Elections Department (DCED). Regular business hours are 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. One important note, if an individual chooses to fax or email their application, they must still mail the hard copy to DCED within four (4) business days. 3.) Returning Your Ballot
Once a voter has filled out their ballot, they can deliver by mail, postage paid; common contract carrier or hand delivered to the address listed below:

Under the Governor’s emergency proclamation, voters may also hand-deliver their ballot in person to DCED any time after ballot is received and voted before or on Election Day. During regular business hours from 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Any time during the extended hours listed on the chart below and on Election Day from 7am-7pm. If delivering in person, a voter must provide an acceptable form of ID upon delivery.
