(WBAP/KLIF) — A Dallas County grand jury elected not to indict the Dallas Police Association President. Mike Mata was cleared, Tuesday, of allegations of evidence tampering in the Amber Guyger murder case.
Guyger, an off duty Dallas Police officer, shot and killed Botham Jean inside his apartment. After the shooting Mata was accused of wrong-doing by telling Guyger not to talk to anyone and having the in-car camera turned off.
Mata maintained that he was not acting as an officer, but as president of a labor organization with attorney-client privilege, which law states cannot be recorded.
The grand jury agreed and declined to indict Mata.
According to Mata’s attorney, the grand jury found nothing incriminating. Attorney robert rogers said jurors thoroughly reviewed evidence and found Mata’s actions fell under attorney-client privilege.
Guyger was later convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
