DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The coronavirus pandemic has prompted a coin shortage in the United States that the Federal Reserve says is related to the recent economic shutdown in many state’s across the country.
With limited in person transactions and fewer people going out, the less cash that was circulated. Now. many stores across the country asking customers to use cards not cash.
According to Creditcards.com, Walmart, CVS, 7-Eleven, Chick-fil-A and Dollar Tree are among the major retailers now asking customers to pay with credit cards, debit cards or exact change.
“At Kroger, if a customer pays with cash, his or her purchase is rounded up to the next dollar, and the excess is either placed onto a store loyalty card for future use, or it can be donated to a charity that aims to eliminate hunger,” the website’s analyst Ted Rossman said.
The Federal reserve believes the coin shortage will end when the economy more broadly opens up.
