NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (WBAP/KLIF NEWS)- As confederate statues across the country are being removed and buildings are being renamed due to associations with the confederacy and slavery, a North Richland Hills high school has decided to change its mascot.

The Richland High School mascot will no longer be ‘Rebels’ after the Birdville ISD board of trustees unanimously voted to change it.

“Richland High School students, staff and alumni have a rich history of doing great things in our community and around the world,” said board president Jack McCarty,   “Our school’s history should be based on people and not divisive symbols.”

The district says the transition to a new mascot may take a full year but some changes will be made on campus immediately.
