DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- After initially resisting the idea of renaming military bases named after confederate leaders, U.S. Senator John Cornyn said he is now more open to the idea. Cornyn announced, while meeting in Dallas, that he supported a Senate Defense Bill that will establish a commission to look into renaming Fort Hood and other military bases named for Confederate military leaders.

“The Senate Armed Services Committee has voted with a bipartisan vote to issue a study and for the commission to come back with recommendations to congress,” said Cornyn.

Cornyn said this is the best way to handle it. “I realize these are contentious issues but what I don’t want us to do is erase history because frankly, when you forget your history you’re condemned to relive it,” said Cornyn. “I think a study is fine,” he said.

This comes after a push to change the name of Fort Hood, a military base in central Texas Killeen, named after confederate general John Bell Hood.
