Funeral Services for George Floyd Held in Texas

HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF) – Thousands of people lined up outside a Houston church on Monday to pay their respects for George Floyd who died in Minneapolis Police custody. Many were taken by the bus load.

The public viewing began two days of services in the city where Floyd grew up.

Inside Fountain of Praise Church the light brown pews were mostly empty as visitors were ushered up the aisle on one side and escorted out the other. Floral arrangements were setup behind Floyd’s casket. People who knew Floyd, and other who didn’t stood in line to get inside.

“He was a good friend and I just wanted to show my respects to the family,” said a Houston native.

An elderly man from Austin said he made the drive to Houston because he felt like it was the right thing to do.

“It just was,” he said. “I don’t know why. It just was.”

Everyone inside was required to where masks. Many visitors were emotional as there 10 minutes inside the church expired.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also paid his respects and met with Floyd’s family members.

“I am committed to working with the family of George Floyd to ensure we never have anything like this occur in the State of Texas,” Governor Abbott said.

A private funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Fountain of Praise Church in Houston.
