An SMU Anthropology Professor’s Tweet About ‘White Privilege’ Goes Viral

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – An tweet by an anthropology at Southern Methodist University about to his 150 followers Monday, did something that he didn’t expect to happen; it went viral, now having been re-tweeted over 570,000 times.

Mark McCoy’s tweet addressed white privilege:

“George Floyd and I were both arrested for allegedly spending a counterfeit $20 bill … For George Floyd, a man my age, with two kids, it was a death sentence … For me, it is a story I sometimes tell at parties … That, my friends, is White privilege.”

“The weight of the coincidence just sat with me,” McCoy told WFAA-TV.

McCoy also told the station that white privilege is something that we just need to talk about because it exists in the world whether we like it or not.

He also says he hasn’t watched the video of George Floyd’s fatal encounter with police, saying, “I know what’s on it and it’s terrifying to me.”
