DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – What’s trending online as “the leaning tower of Dallas” is still standing days after a planned building implosion. Crews are expected to finish the job near Downtown Dallas later this week.
It’s being compared to Italy’s “Leaning tower of Pisa” but it’s an elevator shaft that failed to come down when an old building was imploded Sunday to make way for a new development. Artemio De La Vega is the developer of the new project and is embracing the attention.
“It’s a testament to the people of Dallas and how fun they are,” said De La Vega. “It’s a part of our history.”
De La Vega said that when his project is completed he plans to memorialize the partially demolished building with a piece of art inside the new building.
Meanwhile, Texans are flocking to the site to get their selfies.
“It really is the leaning tower of Dallas,” one visitor said. “What are they going to do about it?”
Crews plan to take a wrecking ball to the structure when the necessary crane arrives in town later this week. An official with Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition said Tuesday that the crane should be in place in the next couple of days.
