DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The City of Dallas continues to work with the Texas delegation to ensure federal help in recovery from last month’s EF-3 tornado that ripped through high end businesses and neighborhoods.

To qualify for a Presidential Disaster Declaration, which would bring federal recovery money, the city must prove $38.5 million in uninsured public infrastructure damage. The city was granted an extension that expires December 20 to present its damage estimate. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson credited help from Texas leaders in receiving the extension.

“They were instrumental in us getting that 30 day extension which we very much needed,” Mayor Johnson said. “It’s been a great example of bipartisan working together for a greater cause which is helping our city bounce back as quickly as possible from this tornado.”

On Tuesday, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) met with Mayor Johnson and Director of Emergency Management Rocky Vaz, as well as members of the Dallas City Council whose districts were hardest hit by the tornadoes.

“Each council member spent a little bit of time telling [Senator Cornyn] the stories of people in their districts,” said Mayor Johnson. “And then we gave him an update.”

Sen. Cornyn and the city leaders also discussed federal disaster assistance programs.
