FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF)- More details are coming out about what happened the night Fort Worth Police responded to a open door check that left Atatiana Jefferson dead.
The arrest affidavit states Jefferson did grab a gun and pointed it out the window because she heard noises outside. It says former officer Aaron Dean failed to announce himself as an officer and shot her through the window.
Officer Manny Ramirez president of the Fort Worth Police Officers Association said Jefferson was not in the wrong.
“I would expect in the state of Texas a lot of people would have reacted the same way Jefferson did,” Ramirez said. “That’s what so devastating about this case…we are here to protect our citizens and we failed them in this regard…there’s no way to describe it,” he said.
Ramirez said the department has recognized they have lost the trust in the community and ill do whatever it takes to restore that trust. “We know that it’s going to be a long road and we know it’s going to take collaboration and unity to make sure something like this never happens again, because it can’t,” he said.
He said by ensuring this doesn’t happen again, they are looking into having a comprehensive overview of how they do scenario-based training and have officers spend more time on their beat so they can spend more time in the communities getting to know the people they serve.
Dean was arrested Monday night and is charged with murder. His bond was set $200,000 he has since posted bond and is awaiting trial.
