Local Car Dealerships Feeling the Pinch as General Motors UAW Strike Continues

ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF)- Employees at Arlington’s General Motors Assembly plant continue to picket outside on day 15 of a national strike demanding better pay and fair contracts. About 5,000 Arlington employees are affected by the work stoppage, they joined about 50,000 United Auto Workers nationwide. The strike has stopped production at around 30 manufacturing sites in nine states. Jim Hardick with the DFW New Car Dealers Association says if this continues, it’ll keep dealers from selling cars and getting parts for repairs.

“We are feeling a tad bit of a punch with getting delays for parts but it’s still very early on,” Hardick said. “I think these dealers are pretty resilient just hunkering down, we are going to make it through it,” he said.

Hardick said there’s no telling when the strike will end and UAW and GM come to an agreement for a new labor contract. “But what I do know is if it starts to hurt the dealers, it starts to hutt the manufactures…it goes hand in hand so I think they need to get this resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

Arlington’s GM makes the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.
