Community Raising Funds for Fallen Richardson Officer’s Highway Dedication Signs

RICHARDSON (WBAP/KLIF)- The Texas Legislature passed a bill to designate the section of 75 Central in Richardson as the Officer David Sherrard Memorial Highway.

Richardson Officer David Sherrard died in the line of duty February last year.

Plano Representative Jeff Leach helped write the bill. “I hope this brings some sort of joy and pride for his family and law enforcement and will remind people who travel this stretch of highway just what he did and the sacrifices he made,” Leach said.

The Bill states that there can be no public funding to create and erect signs for the highway dedication. The Richardson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association set up a Go-Fund-Me page to get the community’s support to help pay for the Sherrard road signs. Bill Rogers is president of the organization, he said TXDOT told him it will cost 24,000 for two signs, to meet Federal guidelines.

The signs will be 7 ft by 18 ft, and each will be placed on the southern and northern borders of Richardson.  “We are trying to honor his memory, the sacrifice he made and what he did for our community,” Rogers said. Rogers said any funds collected in excess will, in turn, be utilized to fund the Richardson Police Officer Memorial at the Public Safety Campus currently under construction at Belt Line and Greenville.
