Police in North Texas shot man who pointed gun at them

GARLAND, Texas (AP) — Police in a North Texas suburb say two officers are on leave after fatally shooting a man they encountered during a welfare call.

According to The Dallas Morning News , Garland police were called around 11 p.m. Friday with a report that a man was parked in a white pickup truck with the intention of killing himself.

Police say two officers arrived at the scene with duty rifles. Garland Police Officer Albert Irazarry said the officers tried to speak to the man from a distance, but when the man pointed his weapon at them, they fired their rifles.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers were not immediately identified. The newspapers reports that one was on the force for six years and the other for eight.
