MESQUITE (WBAP/KLIF News) – The classrooms at Terry Middle School in Mesquite were somber Thursday morning, a day after a student died and three others suffered minor injuries when a school bus crashed.
The bus, which was carrying around 40 students, overturned on the corner of Lawson and Cartwright Wednesday afternoon…an area residents say can be problematic for drivers.
There was a tone of sadness as parents dropped their kids off on campus. Some parents and students brought flowers and teachers lined up outside to greet students before classes started.
Cassie Put has a sixth grade son who was on the bus and said she’s counting her blessings that he walked away with some bruises.
“I had the saddest realization this morning that there’s a chance those parents are like me and one of them leaves for work before their kids get up like me. I don’t get to say goodbye to my kids and now my boss knows every morning I am going to be a little late because I am going to say goodbye to my kids,” she said.
Put said she held on to her son tight when they reunited after the crash. She said it will be awhile before her son will ride a school bus again.
“It’s going to be a long long drawn out process but I am beyond grateful for the people who stopped. That’s why I got to hug my kid last night. I have no doubt about that,” she said.
The district had grief counselors on campus to help students deal with tragedy.
Mesquite ISD’s Laura Jobe said it’s possible the bus hit a power line but police are investigating to find the cause of the crash.
