FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – Young readers and teachers at De Zavala Elementary School will benefit from 1,000 new books this year. The special back to school event with Mayor Betsy Price and Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is designed to stock classroom shelves and help children develop a love for reading.
“The classrooms don’t have enough books, teachers were buying them on their own and many of them can’t do that,” Mayor Price said. “We raised $160,000 and a lot of that is coming from private individuals that want to help the schools,” she said.
This delivery was part of “Read Fort Worth”, a Classroom Library Campaign. The initiative was created by Fort Worth ISD leaders to ensure that young leaders and teachers have access to high-interest books throughout the school day.
The campaign has raised $147,000 in gifts and commitments but a generous donor has challenged the Fort Worth community to raise another $100,000 by September 30th to qualify for a matching grant that will double it to $200,000.
