PLANO (WBAP/KLIF News) – The City of Plano hosted a police memorial service late Thursday morning as part of National Police Week.
Chief Gregory Rushin said officers deserve to be recognized for their sacrifices.
“With all the sacrifices, some may be called to make the ultimate sacrifice and give their lives to their communities and we’re here to honor those who have done that,” he said.
The service includes a reading of all the Texas Peace Officers killed in the line of duty, a performance of taps along with a 21-gun salute.
Plano has only lost two officers in the department’s history. The most recent death was in 2007.
The Dallas and Richardson Police Departments have lost officers in the line of duty this year.
“It can happen anywhere whether it be Little Elm, Plano, Richardson, Dallas – nobody is immune from being hurt or killed on the job as a police officer,” he said.
On Tuesday, Dallas police hosted a memorial services for fallen officers outside City Hall.
Valerie Zamarippa lost her son in the 2016 Dallas Police ambush and said this week brings a mixture of emotions.
“It’s an honor that we get to honor our sons and all the fallen in the past. It’s heartwarming but also very sad,” she said.
Services are also scheduled in Grand Prairie in honor of the fallen.
