DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A candidate running for Dallas County Commissioner’s Precinct 2 is accusing his opponent of offering him a bribe to drop out of the race.
Stephen Stanley said J.J. Koch told him he would pay his campaign debt if he left the race for a seat currently occupied by Mike Cantrell.
Stanley released a recorded phone call of the conversation which stated in part.
“If you have any debts incurred by the campaign, I am happy to write a check for that. Because if Todd is going to go down that road anyway and your not going to run then me keeping you in this race is worthless,” he said.
Koch said it wasn’t a bribe but instead a friendly gesture to a man he thought already intended to drop out of the race.
He said he was attempting to do a favor for Stanley because Stanley had been complaining that he had been speaking badly about him, which Koch denies.
Stanley said he doesn’t believe Koch’s reasoning and stands by his accusations.
“My opponent offered me financial consideration if I would drop out of this race. He is now attempting to minimize his illegal act by defaming my character,” he said.
Stanley has filed a complaint with the state.
