DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Parents are reacting to a letter sent out by Pease Elementary in South Dallas on Friday explaining that a gun went off in a third grader’s backpack last week.
The incident occurred on Thursday.
The letter warned parents to make sure guns are locked away in a safe location, asked parents to speak with their children about gun safety and check their children’t backpacks for banned items before school each day.
LaPrincia Allen has a son and daughter that attend the school.
She said she is disappointed in the way the school handled the situation.
“I feel like they need to be more aware of what the kid is bringing. As far as gun wise, how did you sneak that inside of a school? We have metal detectors and everything. How was it possible that that slipped?” she said.
Allen said it should be a joint effort by parents and the school to make sure these incidents don’t happen.
“These are kids. We’re supposed to be raising them. Then there’s the school’s part because when we drop them off at school…they know that we’re parents together…it’s a partnership and they should check as well,” she said.
No one was injured when the gun went off. Dallas police said they’re investigating the incident.
