DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Senator John Cornyn visited the Dallas County Jail Tuesday to learn about the “Home for Hounds” program, implemented by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
The program pairs inmates with dogs who without training would be put down.
Cornyn said the benefits of the program are two fold.
“The inmates actually help train these dogs so that they can be adopted. In the meantime, it helps them heal themselves in having some personal accountability and working with other people as a team,” he said.
Cornyn said having the inmates train the animals helps them learn the necessary habits needed when they get out of jail.
After viewing the program, Cornyn gave a speech at a conference on criminal justice reform.
