LITTLE ELM (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Little Elm School District alerted parents early Monday morning that school buses were running about two and a half hours behind schedule due to Sunday night’s hail storm.
The district’s Pat Robbins said all but 13 of the 48 buses suffered damage to windshields, headlights and mirrors and most were out of commission.
The district issued a statement to parents on its website that read in part.
“We are arranging to use buses from other districts. We appreciate your understanding as we work to get our buses safely operating again.”
Robbins said when it comes to these situations the safety of the students is the district’s first priority.
“If it’s a broken rear view mirror, or a headlight, or the flashing lights, or a cracked window. We can’t let students get cut. We can’t risk any situation that might increase danger,” she said.
Robbins said Crews are currently working to fix the damaged buses as soon as possible.
“Hopefully, we can do it in a matter of days. They’ll be doing repairs here on site. We’re optimistic that it should be done pretty quick,” she said.
Robbins said they planned to borrow 20 buses from the Burleson and Eagle Mountain Saginaw Independent School Districts.
Sunday’s storms dumped golf and tennis ball-sized hail in Denton, Justin, Highland Village and Flower Mound. Residents reported damage to their homes and cars.
The Justin Fire Department reported that a tornado touched down in their city.
Despite heavy damage, no injuries were reported.
