DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Dallas Zoo’s newest addition arrived in town this week.

The zoo will be showcasing two new hippos starting late next month when it opens its Simmons Hippo Outpost. It’s the first time in 16 years the Dallas Zoo has had hippos on site.

“It’s probably the most requested question we get from guests — ‘Do y’all have hippos?!” said Laurie Holloway of the Dallas Zoo. “So we’re really happy to be able to bring them back.”

There is one male and one female hippo, both of which were brought in from other zoos. The male, Adhama, was brought in from Los Angeles, and the female, Boipelo, came from Albuquerque.

Holloway said bringing hippos back to Dallas has been in the works for several months and that the new exhibit will feature an underwater viewing area — which she says is fitting considering how hippos can spend up to 16 hours a day in the water.

“It’s a perfect pair to Giants of the Savanna. Both are in our Wilds of Africa area,” Holloway said. “It’ll be really neat to see guests to go from one to the other.”
