Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – The City of Dallas may review security at police stations as a result of Sunday’s shooting. Dallas first hired a security consultant after a man fired at police headquarters and tried to plant explosives in June of 2015.
The consultant recommended officers started patrolling outside stations to provide security. The officer on patrol outside the Dallas police South Central Substation who was fired on was part of the security detail.
“Unfortunately, nothing is a 100 percent guarantee when somebody is set on doing something extremely negative,” says Assistant City Manager Eric Campbell.
Campbell says Dallas is also adding more cameras and greater security in the lobby of stations, but he also says the city needs to balance safety with making the stations inviting to the public.
“We don’t want to create fortresses within neighborhoods,” he says. “We want to make it accessible.”
Sunday morning, police say two people fired at an officer in a marked car outside the station near Camp Wisdom and Lancaster. No officers or civilians were hit, but police say three bullets did hit the building.
Police have not made any arrests. Assistant Chief Randy Blankenbaker says the department will review plans to improve security.
The Dallas Police Association has called for the installation of bulletproof glass and fencing around stations.
