Plano (WBAP/KLIF News) – It’s probably not how some people in Plano planned to spend their Thanksgiving Day.

About a hundred residents of the area around Spring Creek and Alma Drive are cleared to go home again, after a major gas leak forced 79 homes to be evacuated this morning.

Captain Peggy Harrell of Plano Fire Rescue says it started about 7:00 this morning, when a woman who lives in the area called to report a strong gas smell in her home.

“When she went outside, the smell was even stronger outside than it was in her home,” said Harrell.  “So 79 homes have been evacuated, we’re anticipating that number is not going to change in homes, but we don’t know the number of residents that is.”

Atmos energy has located the leak and clamped it off.  No word at this time as to when the roads will be opened again..

Meanwhile, Plano Fire Rescue set up warming tents for the residents, the Red Cross gave them coffee and snacks, and Macaroni Grill opened early to provide them with a spaghetti lunch, compliments of Representative Jeff Leach.

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and Councilman Tom Harrison stopped by the Plano Senior Recreation Center to check on those resident who were taken there.
