Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Sacramento County Superior Court Judge said he doesn’t think that Carl Ferrer, CEO of Dallas-based Backpage.com, should face pimping charges.
Judge Michael Bowman said the Communications Decency Act grants immunity to website operators for content posted by their users.
Even though Ferrer’s arrest warrant stated that a large portion of Backpage’s revenue comes from prostitution-related ads, Bowman said it is not enough to substantiate pimping charges.
He said this issue is a matter for Congress not his court to decide.
CEO Carl Ferrer was arrested at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport October 6th and charged with pimping, conspiracy to commit pimping and pimping a minor.
His two controlling shareholders James Larkin and Michael Lacy were charged with conspiracy to commit pimping.
Their arrests came after authorities raided the company’s headquarters on Oaklawn Avenue.
Judge Bowman said he wants to hear more briefs from attorneys and will make a final decision by December 9th.
