Mayor Mike Rawlings emcee’d the event, paying tribute to the building known as “the front door to Dallas”.

“This beautiful train depot, which cost about $6.5 million, including the land, established Dallas as the commercial, and transportation center of the Southwest,” said Rawlings.

Other speakers included former Mayor and former US Trade Ambassador Ron Kirk, and District 30 Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, for whom Union Station is now named.

“I want to thank the Mayor for his remarks, and his leadership in making sure this historic location will be named in my honor,” said Johnson.  “I hope all of you will come back when that ceremony is held.”

The birthday party featured historic placards telling the story of Union Station, and a scale diorama of all the different types of trains that have operated there.  The displays will moved to the first floor passenger waiting area, and made available to the public starting tomorrow.  The exhibit will be free, and will run through October.
