ROWLETT (WBAP/KLIF News) – Police in Rowlett have released a sketch of a man who has been posing as an officer.
The sketch comes based off of a teenager’s description after he said the man tried to kidnap him. The boy told police he was approached by the man while he was playing Pokemon Go.
Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for the car the man was driving, which looks like a Rowlett police car without the front push guard, and with the words “Rowlett Police” written in blue letters instead of the usual silver letters.
Police in Irving are investigating a similar incident.
Press release from the Rowlett Police Department:
Please look at the sketch and if you have any information on the identity of the suspect please call 911, contact the Rowlett Police Department at (972) 412-6200 or the police department where the vehicle is seen.
On 7/29/16 the Rowlett Police responded to report of a child enticement call in the Waterview Neighborhood in Rowlett, Texas. Officers responded and spoke to the 14 year old male that was approached by the police imposter.
The 14 year old child advised that on Friday 7/29/16 at 11:30 a.m., a Rowlett Police car approached him while he was walking in Community Park located at 8500 St. Andrews in Rowlett, Dallas County, Texas.
The male child was walking in the park playing the “Pokemon” game when he observed the Rowlett Police car approach him and stop. The child advised that a white male exited the Rowlett Police vehicle and told him that his mother was looking for him. The male was not wearing a police uniform but did have a fake looking badge clipped to his t-shirt. The police imposter asked the child to get into the police car so he could drive him home. The child did not believe that the man was a real police officer and pulled out his phone and told him he was going to call and see if he was a real police officer. The man got back into the car and left the park and was last seen traveling eastbound on Waterview Parkway driving towards Elm Grove Rd.
The child advised that the police car was a black and white Dodge Charger with “Rowlett Police” on the sides in blue lettering. The vehicle had a clear light bar mounted on top and no front push bumper. No Rowlett Police vehicles currently in service have blue lettering.
The police imposter was described as being a white male in his 30’s, 5’6” balding brown curly hair, rimless glasses, wearing orange t-shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots. The vehicle left eastbound on Waterview Parkway towards Elm Grove Rd.
On 06/23/2015, the Irving Police Department investigated a report of a Rowlett Police impersonator after an adult female reported being stopped by a marked Rowlett Police car matching the same description as the vehicle in the incident on 07/29/16. In the Irving incident the police imposter attempted to arrest the woman for a false traffic warrant. The female did not feel that he was a real police officer and called the Irving Police Department to respond to her location. The imposter returned to his vehicle after realizing that she had called Irving Police and drove away from the scene. The description of the suspect is also similar in both incidents.
Rowlett Police will be searching and reviewing any video surveillance that may have been captured of the fake Rowlett Police vehicle in the neighborhood.
