DART Turns 20

dart numbersDALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas Area Rapid Transit is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Tuesday.

The transit system debuted on June 14, 1996 with an 11-mile network that extended from Pearl Station through downtown Dallas to Oak Cliff.

Today, the DART Rail is 90 miles long and has 62 stations, making it the longest system in the country.  Over the past two decades, DART also expanded into several cities across the Metroplex including Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Garland, Irving, Plano, Richardson and Rowlett.

“DART Rail is delivering new development in every community we serve,” DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas said.  “Dallas is enjoying a renewed downtown, new destinations, and better access to healthcare. Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Garland, Irving, Plano, Richardson and Rowlett each have new, vibrant transit-oriented communities that are gaining national attention.”

DART is marking its anniversary with giveaways on the 20th of every month through December.

The Trinity Railway Express commuter rail line, jointly owned by DART and the Fort Worth T, is also celebrating its 20th anniversary. The first 10 miles of the 35-mile line debuted on Dec. 30, 1996, running from Union Station to what is now Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station.
