I’ve always loved that old Jimmy Buffett song, but now I can personally relate to it. For the first time in 20 years, I’m back in Texas, and I gotta tell you…it feels great!
I was stationed at Ft. Hood for nearly five years back in the ’90s, and spent as much time exploring the state as I could. From landing an 8 lb. largemouth at the Sam Rayburn, to camping in the mountains near Alpine, to rocking out at SWSX, and having countless women try to teach me how to two-step (I have two left feet), I fell in love with the Republic of Texas. Now that I’m in the middle of a career in radio news, I’m still somewhat in shock that I’m working at WBAP. I mean, come on…back in college, my fellow Broadcasting majors and I spoke those call letters in reverent tones. Now that I’m part of the team, I’m still pinching myself.
I’ve done radio in cities as small as Bowling Green, Kentucky — home of my alma mater, Western Kentucky University — as as large as Tampa, and came to Texas from Boise. I was born in Enid, OK, but grew up in Lexington, Kentucky (come NCAA basketball season, it’s probably best to avoid me altogether). I proudly served for 11 years in the US Army, and would do it again. When not scanning countless news websites, I like to hunt, fish, camp, ride my bike, explore, and play loud, fast rock ‘n’ roll in bands. I look forward to reacquainting myself with the DFW music scene as soon as possible.
So again, hello Texas…sure is good to see you again. I look forward to renewing the friendship.
