(HENDERSON: WBAP/KLIF) An East Texas man who inspired the film “Bernie” has been sent back to prison. A jury on Friday sentenced Bernie Tiede, a former East Texas mortician to 99 years to life in prison for the killing of Marjorie Nugent. Tiede was originally given life in prison back in 1999, but was freed in 2014 because of evidence to claims of sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
During the trial, which happened 30 miles west of Carthage, a psychiatrist for the defense told jurors that the relationship between Tiede and Nugent was very abusive and described Tiede as being like a battered wife.
in 1996, Tiede shot Nugent four times with a rifle, then hid her body in a freezer. In his confession, he described her as “Evil” and he snapped under pressure because of her mistreatment.
