Eric Bushman 4/19/16: Fictionalizing History

Bushman HeadShotIt is a reputation that has followed me a majority of my teen aged, young-adult and now professional life: Being the “Kennedy Guy.” That has its pros and cons.

Lately, I have enjoyed the conversation at work from coworkers who have been watching the ‘11.22.63’ miniseries based on the Stephen King book by the same name.

Usually, I have big problems with any novel or movie that takes a historical subject – especially one that is surrounded with controversy – and then throwing a bunch of fiction in its direction.

That changed for me over the past couple of months.

I purchased a Hulu account so I could watch the miniseries. I will admit not to reading the book. Regardless of that, I found the show fascinating.

Now comes this weekend and Fort Worth takes center stage in my life. The Fort Worth Opera commissioned an opera on President Kennedy. Fort Worth, of course, the last city President Kennedy left alive. Like the controversial Oliver Stone movie, the opera is simply called ‘JFK.’ I am doubting though the opera will force an Assassination Records Review Board on a federal level like the Stone film did.

The timing of the opera could not be better. After enjoying a fictional miniseries involving the assassination, now comes an opera dedicated to all things JFK.

I expect fewer arguments from the opera than after watching the mostly-accurate ‘Parkland’ movie and nit-picking what was right and wrong. That just leaves me with a headache.

JFK proposes to Jackie on the Moon, you say? Sure – I’m game.
